For some, an intense fascination with insects and ecosystems is just a phase in childhood. For Thomas Persson Vinnersten, it became the foundation of a definitive career. With a Ph.D. in biology and a focus in entomology, Thomas was part of a large-scale mosquito control projects across Sweden for over a decade. Notably, he pioneered Scandinavia’s first control project using helicopters. His academic research focused on the delicate balance of nature and analyzed how control agents affect non-target organisms.
When he brought his deep biological expertise to Anticimex 12 years ago, he didn't just join a pest control company; he joined a shifting industry. Today, as a key biologist supporting biological matters and heading up Pest Control Technician (PCT) training, Thomas finds himself at the center of an environmental and technological revolution.
The evolution of an industry: the end of the “spray and pray” era
To understand Thomas’s current work, one must look at how radically the Swedish pest control landscape has transformed over the last fifteen years. In the pre-digital era, the traditional approach relied heavily on a "more is better" mentality. Permanent baiting was the industry standard, resulting in a systemic overuse of biocides with absolutely no way to monitor actual pest pressure at individual stations.
TURNING POINT
The turning point came from a perfect storm of legislative and technological evolution. Strict Swedish legislation was introduced, explicitly prohibiting the use of permanent toxic bait. Sensing the shifting tides and empowered by its sense of environmental responsibility, Anticimex introduced its revolutionary SMART digital devices, turning a regulatory challenge into a massive operational advantage.
THE INTRODUCTION OF SMART
Today, the transformation in Sweden is nearly absolute: all new B2B contracts are SMART contracts, with digital technology fully integrated into the core pest protection concept. While residential homes represent the next frontier for widespread SMART adoption, the commercial sector has left traditional and reactive control firmly in the past.
Proofing the future: a booming business segment
This shift from reactive poisoning to proactive exclusion has birthed the fastest-growing business segment in Sweden: Pest Proofing.
Thomas emphasizes that successful pest proofing relies heavily on a consultative, data-driven relationship with the customer. It is no longer about quietly placing traps; it is about transparency and communication. The key to this booming segment lies in:
- Meticulous Documentation: Delivering detailed inspection reports complete with clear photographic evidence and comprehensive risk assessments.
- Customer Education: Taking the time to clearly explain pest vulnerabilities to the customer and positioning pest proofing as a high-value, long-term financial investment that prevents costly future infestations.
Driven by Data, Stopped Before It Starts
The ultimate realization of Thomas’s vision lies in predictive data analytics. Anticimex Sweden now employs dedicated data analysts across each of its 11 regions. By monitoring real-time data streaming from thousands of digital SMART devices, the company can catch pest problems before human eyes ever see them.
"We frequently identify rising rat activity through system alerts well before the customer is even aware a problem exists," Thomas notes. This allows analysts to proactively dispatch a technician to seal an entry point or adjust a SMART trap before a single rodent ever breaches a customer's facility.
By combining the accuracy of biological science with the speed of digital data, Thomas Persson Vinnersten and the Anticimex Sweden team aren't just managing pests, they are changing how environmental conservation works in the modern era.

Professional involvement and awards
Thomas works closely with several Swedish authorities on issues relating to pest control, public health and environmental protection.
Together with the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, he advises on invasive species, including the monitoring and planned control of the Asian hornet, which became established in Denmark in 2025 and is expected to reach Sweden, and for which Anticimex has a government contract should it be detected.
In collaboration with the Swedish Chemicals Agency, he contributes to the responsible use of biocides, an area governed by Swedish legislation which now prohibits the use of permanent poison baits and has driven the transition to supervised SMART methods.
He also collaborates with county administrative boards and local authorities on local issues relating to pest control, public health and the environment.
